i. R E P A I R .  T h e a p p l i c a t i o n o f m a i n t e n a n c e s e r v i c e s ( i n s p e c t , t e s t ,
service,
a d j u s t , align, calibrate, or replace) or other maintenance actions (welding,
grind-
ing, riveting, straightening, facing, remachining or resurfacing) to restore
serv-
i c e a b i l i t y to an item by correcting specific damage, fault, malfunctions, or
failure
in a part, s u b a s s e m b l y , module (component or assembly), end item or system.
OVERHAUL.  T h a t maintenance effort (service/action) necessary to restore

a n item to a completely serviceable/operational condition as prescribed by mainten-
a n c e s t a n d a r d s ( i . e . , D M W R ) in appropriate publications. Overhaul is normally the
highest degree of maintenance performed by the Army. Overhaul does not normally re
t u r n an item to like new condition.
k .  REBUILD.
C o n s i s t s of those services/actions necessary for the restora-
t i o n of unserviceable equipment to a like new condition in accordance with original
m a n u f a c t u r i n g standards. Rebuild is the highest degree of material maintenance appl-
ied to Army equipment. T h e rebuild operation includes the act of returning to zero
t h o s e measurements (hours/miles, e t c . ) , considered in classifying Amy equipment/
components.

COLUMN 1, GROUP NUMBER. Collum 1 lists group numbers, the purpose of
w h i c h is to i d e n t i f y components, assemblies, sub-assemblies, and modules with the
next higher assembly.
b.
COLUMN 2, COMPONENT/ASSEMBLY. Column 2 contains the names of components,
a s s e m b l i e s , s u b - a s s e m b l i e s , and modules for which maintenance is a u t h o r i z e d .
COLUMN 3, MAINTENANCE FUNCTIONS. Column 3 lists the f u n c t i o n s to be

perfomed on the item listed in Column 2, (For a detailed explanation of these func-
t i o n s , see paragraph C-2.)
d . C O L U M N 4, MAINTENANCE LEVEL. Column 4 specifies, by the listing of a
"work time" figure in the appropriate subcolunn(s), the lowest level of maintenance
a u t h o r i z e d to perform the functions listed in Column 3. This figure represents the
a c t i v e time required to perform the maintenance functions at the indicated level of
m a i n t e n a n c e . If the number or complexity of the tasks within the listed maintenance
functions vary at different maintenance levels, appropriate "work time" figures will
b e shown for each level. The number of man-hours specified by the `Work time" figure
represents the average time required to restore an item (assembly, sub-assembly,
component or module, e n d item or system) to a serviceable condition. The symbol des-
ignation for the various maintenance levels are as follows:
