Serviceman should be aware of acid burns.
When testing for odor, release a small amount of
gas and smell it cautiously to avoid inhalation of
toxic decomposed products.
When discharging gas or liquid refrigerant from a
burnout, avoid eye-or-skin-contact with the prod-
uct.
If the entire charge is to be removed, it should be
discharged outside any enclosure.
NOTE
In accordance with the Environmen-
tal Protection Agency regulations, re-
frigerants cannot be discharged into
the atmosphere. A refrigerant recov-
ery and recycling unit must be used
whenever discharging the refrigerant
system.
Connect and operate recovery/recylcling unit in
accordance with manufacturers instructions.
Operation of the recovery/recycling unit must be
by AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL ONLY.
Wear rubber gloves to avoid acid burns when
handling sludge from a burned out compressor.
Use great care to avoid contact with liq-
uid refrigerant or refrigerant gas being
discharged from any container under
pressure. Sudden and irreversible tissue
damage can result from freezing. Wear
thermal protective gloves and a face pro-
tector or safety glasses in any situation
where skin-or-eye-contact is possible.
Prevent contact of refrigerant gas with
flame or hot metal surfaces. Heat
causes the refrigerant to breakdown and
form carbonyl chloride (phosgene), a
highly toxic and corrosive gas.
