To remove an unserviceable item and install a serviceable counter-
p a r t in its place. "Replace" is authorized by the MAC and is shown as the 3rd posi-
tion code in the SMR code.

b y correcting specific damage, fault, malfunction, or failure in a part, subassembly,

j . Overhaul. T h a t maintenance effort (service/action) prescribed to restore
a n item to a completely serviceable, operational conditioner as required by maintenance
s t a n d a r d s in appropriate technical publications (i.e., DMWR). Overhaul is normally
t h e highest degree of maintenance performed by the Army. Overhaul does not normally
r e t u r n an item to like new condition.
k . Rebuild. Consists of those services/actions necessary for the restoration
o f unserviceable equipment to a like new condition in accordance with original man-
u f a c t u r i n g standards.
Rebuild is the highest degree of materiel maintenance applied
t o Army equipment.
The rebuild operation includes the act of returning to zero those
a g e measurements (hours/miles, etc.) considered in classifying Army equipment/compo-
nents.

a . Column 1, Group Number. C o l u m n 1 lists functional group code numbers,
t h e purpose of which is to identify maintenance significant components, assemblies,
s u b a s s e m b l i e s , and modules with the next higher assembly.
b . Column 2, Component/Assembly. Column 2 contains the names of components,
a s s e m b l i e s , subassemblies, and modules for which maintenance is authorized.
c . Column 3, Maintenance Function. C o l u m n 3 lists the function to be per-
f o r m e d on the item listed in Column 2. (For detailed explanation of these functions,
s e e paragraph B-2.)

F a u l t locate/troubleshoot The process of investigating and detecting the
c a u s e of equipment malfunctioning; the act of isolating a fault within a system or
u n i t under test (UUT).

Disassemble/assemble - e n c o m p a s s e s the stepby-step taking apart (or break-
d o w n ) of a spare/functional group coded item to the level of its least componency
i d e n t i f i e d as maintenance significant (i.e., assigned SMR code) for the category of
m a i n t e n a n c e under consideration.
