MAINTENANCE ALLOCATION CHART
Section I. Introduction
GENERAL.

a . T h i s section provides a general explanation of all maintenance and re
pair functions authorized at various maintenance levels.
b . T h e Maintenance Allocation Chart (MAC) in Section II designates overall
responsibility for the performance of maintenance functions on the identified end
item or component. The implementation of the maintenance functions upon the end item
o r compnent will be consistent with the assigned maintenance functions.
c . Section III list the special tools and test equipment required for each
m a i n t m a n c e function as referenced from Section II.
d . S e c t i o n IV contains supplemental instructions on explanatory notes for a
p a r t i c u l a r maintenance function.

I N S P E C T . To determine serviceability of an item by comparing its physi-

c a l , mechanical and/or electrical characteristics with established standards through
examination.
b . T E S T . To verify serviceability and detect incipient failure by measur-
i n g mechical or electrical characteristics of an item and comparing those charac
teristics with prescribed standards.
c . S E R V I C E . Operations required periodically to keep an i t e m in proper
operating condition, i.e., to clean (decontaminate), to preserve, drain, to paint,
o r t o r e p l e n i s h f u e l , l u b r i c a n t s , hydraulic fluids, or compressed a i r s u p p l i e s .
d . A D J U S T . To maintain within prescribed limits, by bringing into proper
o r exact-position, or by setting the operating characteristics to be within specified
parameters.
e . A L I G N . To adjust specified variable elements of an item to bring about
optimn or desired performance.
f . CALIBRATE.
T o determine and cause corrections to be made or to be ad-
j u s t e d on instruments or test measuring and diagnostic equipments used in precision
m e a s u r e m e n t . Consists of comparision of two instruments, one of which is a certified
s t a n d a r d of known accuracy, to detect and adjust any discrepancy in the accuracy of
the instrument being compared.
g. I N S T A L L .
T h e act of emplacing, seating, or fixing into position an item,
p a r t or module (component or assembly) in a manner to allow the proper functioning
of an equipment or system.
