TM  9-4120-367-14 TM 07592B-14/1 6.9  COMPRESSOR. - Continued Location/Item Diagnosing Compressor Motor  Burnout - Continued Cleanup Procedures Action (8) (9) NOTE Before checking the compressor mo- tor, make sure the compressor and crankcase heater are cool to the touch. Otherwise, a false indication may be obtained due to internal mo- tor protectors being open. Check the compressor motor to see if it is electrically grounded or open. A 500-volt megger or an ohmmeter can be g. h. a. b. c. d. e. used for making the test. (10) Megger reading is at least 5 megohms. After removal of a bad compressor from the re- frigeration system, remove all external tubing and tip the compressor toward the discharge port to drain a small quantity of oil into a clear glass con- tainer. If the oil is clean and clear, and does not have an acrid smell, the compressor did not fail because of motor burnout. If the oil is black, contains sludge and has an acrid odor, the compressor failed because of mo- tor burnout. If a burnout has occurred, the refrigeration sys- tem must be cleaned to prevent residual contami- nants from causing repeated burnouts. System must be cleaned thoroughly to remove all contaminants. Discharge refrigerant from system. Nitrogen purge both high and low sides of sys- tem. Remove and install new drier/filter. Install new drier/filter in suction line. Install “pressure tap” (valve) between bulbwell and suction line drier/filter. Remarks If not, a repeat burnout will oc- cur. Paragraph 6.4. Wear rubber gloves. Paragraph 6.5 Paragraph 6.15 Use same drier/filter as used in  system. 6-31 f.
